With the release in December of the first ever PLM Governance Standard, the PLMIG has been asked how the Standard will be formally assessed.
The Governance Standard was developed by the 2011 workshop series in Gothenburg, Munich, Milan and London, and is a distillation of best-practice PLM management and oversight at all levels of a company. It gives the CEO and VPs clear visibility of PLM throughout the enterprise, and provides the PLM Team with a natural mechanism for meeting the Board's requirements.
A key feature of the Standard is that it does not rely on restrictive rules, and does not require extensive documentation of procedures. Care has been taken to keep it simple, lightweight and accurate. It therefore does not require extensive documentation of procedures, and can be applied by any proactive PLM Team as a methodology for integrating board-level and operational PLM.
However, in large and complex organisations, an external assessment can be very useful. It reduces the internal workload and de-personalises the findings. Where PLM Governance is hampered by issues of culture, management communication or organisational structure, a well-documented external assessment is a powerful way of gaining attention and agreement.
In most cases, therefore, companies will apply the Standard for themselves, and the Board and the PLM Team will manage the results. If an external assessment is required, this can be provided by the PLMIG as part of Corporate Membership.
The PLM Governance Standard has been published in the Q4 2011 issue of the PLM Journal.
